The Oaks is a Grade II listed residential property forming one wing of Ham House Stables that was originally built in 1610 as the stable block for the Grade I listed Ham House, this wing was converted into two residential units during the 1970s.
Our Client purchased one of the properties in the late 1990’s and commissioned Foster + Partners to carry out a major refurbishment. Their vision was to install a modern steel and glass structure that delicately wrapped around the beautiful oak frame to create a split level house over 3 floors.
The Client subsequently bought the adjoining property in the mid 2000’s with the aim of unifying the two units to form one coherent house. Our vision for the Phase 2 Works was to extend the original Foster + Partners concept to create a revised diagram that provided additional living areas and reconfigured bedroom arrangements for the enlarged family.
Our contemporary proposals sensitively retains the existing internal oak structure and re-instates many of the buildings lost features, including the original blacksmiths fire. This beautiful architectural element has been reinstated in conjuction with the restoration of the properties landmark chimney attached to the Southern Elevation facing the River Thames. Internally an ill-conceived mezzanine level has been removed to create a stunning double height living / music / cinema room focused around the new open fire.
Expanding the clever circulation diagram of the Foster + Partners Phase 1 works, the Master Bedroom has been brought down to the Mezzanine Level to create a private suite and the children’s bedrooms have been reconfigured on the upper roof level within the rhythm of the oak structure.
A complete overhaul of the M+E to the house has allowed a fully integrated heating, lighting, audio and visual system, by Gira to be installed that allows complete control from any networked phone/computer in house or remotely from anywhere globally. The brief being to create a fun and very interactive engagement with the newly reconfigured house.
The palette of materials has been altered from the original works, with the introduction of a darker American Walnut finish, complimented by an off-white / grey wall finish and deep slate grey finish to joinery and bathroom areas.
