The existing property offered little spatial quality and its poor construction and extensive subsidence meant a rebuild was required.
From this starting point we have set out a proposal that offers a predominantly single storey house, providing 3 double bedrooms arrange around two private courtyard gardens at Ground Floor Level and a modest First Floor element with glazed openings set deep within the brick façade.
The main massing of the proposed house is pushed to the eastern boundary of the site, which allows for the external courtyard garden space on the south side of the plot to be maximized, linked directly to the main living spaces and main entrance.
The proposed materials for the house have been selected from extensive research into the local vernacular and materials that will allow the contemporary building to ‘fit in’ with its surroundings.
High performance, triple glazed windows and deep overhangs to control solar gain incorporate a similar colour palette to the proposed brickwork and of a scale appropriate to its domestic setting.
A green roof is also proposed over the single storey flat roof. The mixed sedum and wildflower planting will soften the visual impact of the house and support a wider SUDS system, utilizing the existing rainwater attenuation tank that exists on the site.
We are looking forward to realising this project in 2022.
