Once a Victorian defence against potential French invasion, Fort Corblets, with its 13 guns and 59 soldiers, stood as a sentinel in the mid-19th century. The Northern Ramparts, the fort's northernmost and largest bastion, commanding views of the English Channel, was repurposed over the years. Acquired by the current owners in 2006, The Northern Ramparts within the Fort was rebuilt as a contemporary dwelling between 2009 and 2022, this circular residence seamlessly integrates with the historical fort surroundings while offering awe-inspiring panoramic views.
Design Concept
The Northern Ramparts embodies a fusion of modern living and the fort's defensive architecture. The circular design not only pays homage to the fort's original structure but also presents a bold architectural challenge, expertly accommodating rational living spaces internally.
Exterior
Craftsmanship takes centre stage in the residence's exterior, featuring industrial ribbon glazing and locally sourced Alderney granite, a testament to the builders' skill. The circular roof, spanning 20m in diameter, is supported by an innovative steel 'skeleton' designed by Paul Armstrong. This steel structure incorporates bespoke stainless steel hangers supporting the stone above the glazing. The result is a visually captivating structure that harmoniously reflects and refracts the ever-changing island light.
Large Expanses of Glazing
The Northern Ramparts offers expansive panoramic glazing that frames views from the lighthouse to the east to the beach to the west. These windows flood the interiors with natural light, providing uninterrupted views of the seascape and sky. The design ensures occupants remain connected to their environment, creating an immersive experience whether on stormy or serene days.
Interior Spaces
Modern luxury and functionality define the interior spaces of The Northern Ramparts. The open-plan layout enhances a sense of spaciousness in the southern half, while carefully planned bedrooms occupy the northern half. A central 'oculus' rooflight introduces natural light into an additional, more intimate living area. All the joinery, including the kitchen was built my master joiner Dominic Ash. A circular layout promotes fluid movement within the house, fostering continuity and connection between different living areas with different spatial qualities.
Sustainability
Beyond its visual appeal, The Northern Ramparts prioritizes thermal efficiency, incorporating cutting-edge green technologies such as energy-efficient lighting, underfloor heating, and a rainwater harvesting systems. It also exemplifies a 'fabric first' approach to the external envelope, with a heavy concrete base acting as a heat sink.
Conclusion
The Northern Ramparts stands as a testament to the seamless integration of contemporary design principles with the historical charm of Fort Corblets, Alderney. Its circular form, expansive glazing, and dedication to craftsmanship create a residence that not only captivates the senses but also enriches the lives of its inhabitants. This house is a harmonious blend of history and modernity, deserving recognition for its innovation and commitment to preserving Alderney's unique heritage.
